The band is YAWN. Which stands for You Are Wild Nancy. That’s not true. I think maybe the band’s name is actually a defense mechanism, like Iceland deterring foreigners claiming their country is full of Ice, when in fact it is full of green pastures and hot babes. So maybe YAWN is hoping people will see their name and think, “Cool, I need something to fall asleep to.” And then they listen and are like, “Oh no you didn’t YAWN!!”
File this one under the experimental rock category – think Yeasayer, Animal Collective, or Delorean. I am only calling this type of music experimental because that is what I hear thrown out whenever the sound is too confusing to put in one of the major boxes. But I’m still predicting this music is what the future sounds like.
But one thing with this crazy, all-over-the-place sound, is that it is hard to do it and make good, solid songs at the same time. Yet, I think YAWN has figure out the secret recipe. You will know what I mean when you hear Kind of Guy, that song is a certified jam!
These guys are from Chicago and have been together for a few years under the moniker Metrovox. YAWN was born after their sound started to shift to craziness rather than traditional 4-piece rock n roll. On their MySpace page they mention if there is to be a reason for the name YAWN, they cite that yawns are contagious.
Beyond their EP (which is on their website for free), they’ve got a handful of other free music goodies to find if you dig around the site a bit. And as with many of the bands making a similar sound, ridiculous and NSFW videos must be made to accompany the music. If you thought Yeasayer made some bizarre videos, let me introduce you to the zany mind of YAWN and the video director, The Druid Beat (warning: you might want to skip to 1:10 for the music to begin).
Here is that stand-out track I mentioned earlier and another one from their remix album. And if you want their EP, all you have to do is download it from their website for free (recommended donation is tell a friend about them, I think).

Oh yeah, and of course there is this…

That first video is batshit, but pretty cool. Now the second vid….well I think they should send it to T-pain and see if he’ll hop on the remix to the remix
Cheers for the tip off – good stuff!
