Contrary to the title of this post we are not giving away Muffins with the characters from Where The Wild Things Are drawn in icing. Although, now that I think about it…

We are however, thanks to our good friends at Filter, giving away a Where The Wild Things Are prize package.

The reason for this awesome contest is, of course, to celebrate the release of the film on DVD. The movie will be available on iTunes on March 2nd!

And we figure that the readers of the Muffin are big fans of this movie, because based on the latest bakery censes reports people who come to the Muffin fit one of three categories; people who are still children at heart, fans of Spike Jonze, and acid-dropping hippies. And I’m sure there are a handful of folks who just looked over at the stuffed animals on their bed as one of them came to life and said, “Spike Jonze is your personal savior!”

You’ll remember Train wrote a nice little piece about the amazing Karen O led soundtrack for the film. And if you’ve slept on this album, time to stop hitting the snooze button, because it is such beautiful work.

The prize package consists of the following:

a copy of the soundtrack on CD
a Carol Mask
a Paper Crown
a copy of FILTER’s WTWTA special issue

To enter the contest all you have to do is comment on this post and tell us about a crazy dream you remember from your childhood.  We will “randomly” choose the coolest story and Filter will send you your goodies.  Oh, and this is for folks in the US only – sorry Canada, you can’t have everything.

And if you do end up being the winner we would LOVE for you to snap a photo wearing your brand new Wild Things garb.

We’ll choose the winner Monday March 8th.  Good luck!

my vague rememberance of a standout childhood dream:
i am a young toddler me, in baby blue footies (i always got my brother’s hand-me-downs) standing in the middle of the road on a dusty deserted Texas highway. a strange car is parked on the side but that is of irrelevance because all i care about is basking in that dry sun.

As a child, i had the same reoccurring dream until i was about 14. I was always big into HotWheels cars. And i had one car that i really loved, it was an orange truck actually. Anyway, i would dream that the bad guys from Home Alone (1,2) would kidnap me in it (it was life sized in my dream) and drive away really fast. We went to McDonalds every time. However, they never ordered me anything. And because i was kidnapped, i didn’t have time to grab money myself. Those Bastards. It was scary. Needless to say, that car wasn’t my favorite anymore. : /

So this wasn’t really a childhood dream since I had it about a week ago, but it did have a colorful cast of characters. I was teaching in my classroom, which has a fireplace (in real life, not just the dream.. its a long story involving an ex-boarding school and a lot of asbestos). So I’m teaching with these horrible muppet knockoffs that were apparently my little helpers. I asked them how they had arrived at my school and they described this long journey. Similar to a movie we had a nice flashback sort of thing and I found that they rode there way down a river on a gigantic ear of corn. The thing that struck me about the gigantic ear of corn is that it was kind of rotting.. kind of gross. So on this giant corn are all my little helpers but also a talking mitten. So we cut back to the classroom and I ask, “what has happened to the mitt?!” Turns out the mitt wasn’t as evolved as the other muppetknockoffs and it could only talk and there it was laying in the fireplace, somewhere where it wouldn’t get stepped on of course.
So then i wanted around with the talking mitt and checked out the swim meet. But when it got splashed the mitt starting screaming about hating chlorine and I got nervous and dropped him in the pool…. He could not swim.

I had a recurring dream as a child that I was a knight, in his underwear of course, but wielding a sword. I was in a castle on a big mountain and had to go from room to room, all of which were bathrooms, and slay whatever bad guy was hanging out in each bathroom.

I have two. They are the two that stick out in my memory the most. One is recurring, and the other I only experienced once. My recurring one was practically in slow motion. I was swimming in a breathstroke underwater and i was swimming and swimming and swimming, everything was a greenish bluish tint, and a seal was circling me. I had to push long stalks of seaweed out of my way, and finally when i had to take a breath i breathed in, but i didn’t choke or cough, or drown, but breathed the water in like it was oxygen. It felt so natural. i could breath underwater. then i would wake up. My second dream i was running down a country road, with pines surrounding me. It was chilly, and i had no destination. when i reached the top of a small hill, i saw a gigantic mountain in front of me. Then the sun rose and shined a golden light on the entire mountain. It was the most beautiful thing i had ever seen, and when i woke up i was sitting up in my bed crying, with happiness.

I dreamt that I went down into the basement of my house, but instead of being the dark scary basement it really is, there were all these tunnels connected to it and a huge aquarium in one room with glowing fish. Then I went upstairs and looked in the drawers of my room and inside were all the things I had ever lost.

When I was younger, I had this dream where there was some sort of creature living in our air vents. For some reason beyond me, we had to feed it in order to keep it happy. I got pretty pissed at this fact, so I crawled in the ducts to see what was up this this dude living in our house. I crawled for what seemed like forever when I encountered some sort of frog-human-dog hybrid. I was about to battle it to the death when it said it was impressed with me and took me to his spaceship. Then I would wake up…I never found out what happens afterward…damn my dreams!

I had a dream about a white rabbit with a pocket watch. i followed it into its hole. When i did, i fell down the hole into a hallway full of doors. At the end of the hallway, there was a table with a key. the key opened the tiniest of the doors. i poked my head through, and i saw a beautiful garden. I wanted so badly to go into the garden, but the door was too small. I then find a drink with a note that tells me to drink it. I do so. Then a cake, i eat the cake. I grow and shrink and am not ever able to reach the key. Eventually i make it outside and i stumble upon a huge caterpillar. He gave me magic mushrooms (Calm down hippys) anyway. these mushrooms. i could grow and shrink as i wanted. it severed to be handy later on. i met a cat that helped me navigate through the woods. His name was Cheshire. The cat leads me to this crazyyyy tea party. everyone is real mad. And this guy, i think his name was Hatter, thinks its 6:00 all the time? After the tea party, i wandered and met the Queen of hearts. except, she was a card. and a person. it was weird. not to mention a bitch. We played croquet for awhile. And then she drags me off to this court case she had to be at. I forgot the name. Anyway, the defendant was totally being screwed. i wasnt going to stand for that shyte. so i get up on the stand, and i’m like, “Whoa! you niggas crazy” (I paraphrased that. i dont remember exactly what i said). And then everyone, by everyone i mean a full deck of cards, got mad at me and started attacking me! it was crazy. And then i woke up. and realized it was only a dream .

Like pretty much everyone, I have had endless dreams of flying. They were always the same and they were always wonderful. Since dreams described tend to be boring, I hope my poetic recounting will score points at the Bakery…

Occasionally nights when I couldn’t sleep,
I’d walk just a little on my little feet,

Up to my window in my little room,
And wish I could fly with a “swoosh” and a “zoom”,

I’d pull up the shade to let in some light,
And open the window to let in the night,

I’d take a deep breath then push off the edge,
And fall to the garden but just at the hedge,

The wind rushing by me would grab to me tight,
And then for a little send me into flight.

I had a dream that I checked into a hotel. My room was supposed to have two beds but it only had one. So I went to the front desk and told them I had the wrong room, but they said that’s all they had. When I told them I made my reservation months ago, they basically told me to deal with it. The person working the front desk was Pee Wee Herman, btw.

When I went back to the room, they had already checked someone else into that room. That meant I didn’t have a room at all.

I ended up sleeping in the hotel lobby next to a giant potted plant that had just been fertilized, so it smelled really bad.

When I woke up after that dream, Flo Rida’s “Low” was stuck in my head all morning.

This wasn’t a childhood dream obviously. It was Wednesday.

When I was little I always had this dream about running from leprechauns while pushing my grandpa in a wheel barrow, we would hide in this big water run-off pipe, after what seemed like hours passed, we would come out and walk down this field, where we would sit and fish till dark. My grandpa died when I was 2, so it was nice to see him in my dreams.

As a child, I loved my dreams. I would find myself waking up early only to fall back asleep into the wondrous land I had left (which led me to always be late for school). Thanks to my quite unique upbringing, I grew up on a wide variety of music that seemed to complete my dreams. Each land I entered had a different melody attached. The dream that stands out the most in my vivid memory goes like this:
I am completely naked and it is very normal and comfortable (I’m surprised I didn’t grow up to become a nudest). I begin to do a set of cartwheels through space to what now I can only understand as different dimension. As I’m doing the cartwheels my hair begins to grow longer and longer, soon I have long, auburn hair past my feet. I use my hair to make a dress around myself. I do cartwheels to a world where the land has been taken over by SLUGS, all sorts of slugs, long, fat, skinny, and banana. (Now slugs were a big fear of mine growing up, so this dream was turning more into a nightmare). When I entered this world I would have to find an animal to ride on so I wouldn’t have to step in the slug mess covering the earth. This land that I had entered many times would always remind me of the song my dad loved: Townes Van Zandt “Waiting Around to Die.” I was to young to really understand the song, but for me, it just fit. I love that song but still cringe a little every time I listen to it.

I’m not sure how I left this land (I probably cartwheeled my way out), but when I did I always entered something greater. In this dream I came across a world where the earth was made out of oobleck, you know the stuff made from cornstarch and water! I loved that stuff, I had always wished that I could lay in a bath tub full of it. Well, in this dream I had a whole world of it. I can remember, in the dream, I would roll around in the oobleck and as I did it would change colors. Fabulous colors of turquoise and violet. I would roll around and sing Joni Mitchell. My mom loved her. She would stroll around the house singing Joni, and it made me think of pure happiness. So it was only right that my happiness in my dreams correlated with Joni.
