I have this thing for hot female members of indie rock bands. This distinguished list of mine has to include Peggy Wang from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. A couple others jump to mind; Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley and Alexandra Lawnfrom Ra Ra Riot. The weird thing is they are all former girlfriends of mine, all relationships of which ended disastrously, but that is completely beside the point. Moving on.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart battles purity in the city that never sleeps (NYC) whilst remarkably re-sparking many’s interest in the distorted form of twee pop that was once fueled by bands like Rocketshipand the “Slumberland sound”, but faded quickly thereafter. I will say this, I like watching a bunch of geeks go nuts on stage. Unlike most modern day “pop-rock” stars, these bands actually do it for the love of the music and they are actually very talented musicians. I appreciate bands like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart who are all working day jobs, rehearsing at their offices and still finding time to reach out to their fan base. These guys are all over the Internet and a lot of that is self-initiated. Their predecessors, bands like Arcade Fire and others, started the same way and got themselves blogged all the way to the top. I see a similar fate for this band following their first LP (2009) which is self-titled on Slumberland/Fortuna Pop. With that, I will leave you with a couple of their tastier tracks.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will be playing The Echo is LA on 7/20. Click for tour dates.
