Today is May 19th, 2009 and we’re looking at a pretty juicy day for new releases. Just looking at the iTunes new release wall we’ve got Eminem, Green Day, and Busta Rhymes. Looking at the more eclectic releases we’ve got the debut of Brushfire Records newest addition Zee Avi, the cute NYC girls of Au Revoir Simone, and of course the release that made the ground shake in LA the other day, Passion Pit.
You’re busy, I get it. But I’ve got one more for you - one you won’t find on the new release wall. In fact, you’ve probably spent your entire allowance already, and Sam from The Flying Change might just give you their album for free…
Sam is the driving force behind the band, with a handful of musicians lending a hand when he is in need. You will often find him near his New York stomping grounds. He’s also got a very awesome blog, and I may dare to say it is the most interesting band blog I’ve seen (sorry Kanye). Here is a little snippet from Sam’s blog with him describing the creation of the song Dirty White Coats:
Once again I felt compelled to write a bridge and this is one of those times where not only was it too much, it took you completely out of the song on some bizarre sideroad that really wasn’t very helpful. Just a small minor-key moment that was kind of boring in its predictability But the aha moment.
Sam is very much a poet. His dry, honest delivery of his lyrics continue in this thread. Many of the songs on the album, Pain is a Reliable Signal, sound like they should be depressing - but the instruments play happy melodies and by the end of the song, Sam takes his voice up an octave or two and you know everything will be okay.
Like I said, Sam is giving away the album. I won’t tell you exactly how to get it. But if you are savvy enough within these social webs - you’ll figure it out. Enjoy the two songs below, I picked them because they offer a good sampling for the album, one guitar driven, the other, piano.
