The Cataracs are a duo from L.A. by way of Berkeley, CA. One goes by “Cyrano” (left) and the other by “Campa” (right).
They make bass-heavy club bombs.
They also make sexy joints for the women-friend (and guys like me that secretly, okay-not so secretly, crush the slow jams. Cruuuuuuuuuush.).
Sadly, I was a couple of years late to this party. I didn’t get on the train until ‘09 when I heard Nick Catchdubs’ remix of their smash, “Club Love.” From there it was my typical due diligence (Google and then straight to iTunes). And the rest, as they say, is noise complaints from the neighbors and the 24-hour security guy that rides around my building on a Segway.
In February of this year, “The Cata” released a mixtape they put together with DJ Greg Street called “I Thought They Were Black.” Get on over to their ‘Space, and mall cop that. I have seriously run that mixtape so much over the last few weeks that I almost pulled a hammy.
The Cataracs are further blurring the lines between Hip-Hop and Electronic in a LMFAO-sort of way. Their music is just as carefree as LMFAO, but with a touch less energy and loads more “sexy.” If pressed, I would say their music genre is “Bass, ass, chicks, alcohol, party, beach, club, sex.” I’m over naming genres; all I really know is that their music makes me want to get ignorant…and then slowly grind a dime piece so dirty that she would call me “Pat Swayze.” And I don’t need to tell you that those are both good things.
A lot of artists are really freaking their vocals with mounds of effects these days, but TC’s stuff seems to sound better than everyone else’s. I am loving their compression, reverb, phasing, delay and pitch change settings. When it comes to production, these dudes have game. Every time I hear one of their tracks, I feel embarrassed about my Pro Tools skills (oh, and I use Pro Tools nine hours a day at my job). A lot of people are blogging about these guys, but I am probably the only blogger that desperately wants to be their studio intern so I can learn their effect presets. Did I just lose you? Sorry. Please keep reading…
Other Important Notes:
1 – I completely lose my shit when they drop their beats down to half-tempo during hooks (“Fall in Love,” “Club Love (Nick Catchdubs x Proper Villains Remix)”) Seriously, hot.
2 – “Malibu Pimpin’” might be the dopest shit I have ever heard. I’ve been Malibu pimpin’ for years, but now that there’s an anthem, well…that changes everything.
3 – Through extensive research I have figured out that the faster you get over the fact that Cyrano looks like Nomar Garciaparra and Campa looks like A-Trak and just begin enjoying their music, the better off you will find yourself.
Immediately, you can tell these guys simply have more fun than the rest of us do. This pisses me off, but at the same time, is also really cool. At the end of the day, I am now checking for these guys BIG TIME.
Go buy some of their stuff and start bumping it. I did, and I’m awesome.
Cata!!!,
Try not to wiz your draws at the 1:48 mark during this one. I wasn’t so lucky my first time.
