Some bands just keep finding their way back onto the Muffin. If your music earns you multiple posts on our site, its probably because you are either paying us a great deal of money or putting out some seriously killer tunes and noteworthy performances. The Avett Brothers are doing the latter.
After Bootsy did all you Muffin-addicts a favor by introducing this band back in April of 2008, I too must admit that following her post was the first time I took a good look at this folk-rock band filled with brotherly love. Since then, they have remained on my radar which seemingly detected their presence about a month ago, right here in San Diego.
The Avett Brothers were born to play the Belly Up. Rivaling The Casbah as my favorite venue in San Diego, what appears to be an upside-down wooden ship nestled comfortably near the sands of Solana Beach, played host to an energetic crowd anticipating affirmation that The Avett Bros were as amazing as we all have been hearing. On this particular night, the characteristically mellow local crowd was freckled with Southerners who were gripping Pabst tall cans and creating a serious pre-show buzz. I happen to find myself next to a couple of gentleman from North Carolina who were now living in San Diego for one reason or another. I knew these two were “fixin” to have a good time because 1) the bourbon was flowing, 2) they were already naming off all the songs they wanted to hear and 3) they were asking everyone around them if they were aware of the power of The Avett Brothers. I trusted that a healthy combination of bourbon cokes and the song “Nothing Short of Thankful” had already touched these two boys hearts, but I was ready to see for myself.
I won’t divulge as to what this band is all about; who they are, where they come from, etc. You can and should read Bootsy’s post for that (its far better written than what I am capable of). What I will say is that this band is for real. Their voices are amazingly harmonic and yet so real at the same time. Their energy from the opening song to the fifth and final song of their encore was consistently potent. Their band is talented, they are cordial and gracious (I like when bands are thankful to an enthusiastic crowd) and they know how to make you feel like you are a part of the most ridiculously entertaining ho-down even if you have no idea what you are supposed to do when folk music is playing.
These guys will turn heads from Raleigh to Los Angeles. Put them on your radar, see them live, you will understand what I am saying. I promote REAL musicians.

Foote-
Great job showing love for these fellers. Unfortunately I missed em when they apparently rocked the socks off the Fillmore up in the Golden Gated Town. Will make sure I stay in town next time their bus rolls on through. Hope all is good in the southerly direction. Gotta get down there sooner or later. Let me know if you make it north
whoa!!! thanks for the compliments my dear friend…. there is nothing better in the entire world than me knowing that you love this band….
The Avett’s are awesome. I live in Australia so seeing the Avett Brothers live is not an option unless I fly to the USA, tempting as it may be.
I have been listening since Four Thieves Gone, and hope the new album breaks them more widely o/s so they come here and play some festivals.
