This last week I was stomping through Canada and then on to New York City. I hadn’t been there since I was a kid and besides leaving with extreme sleep deprivation I got to party (and meet) our very own Train!
I know what you’re thinking – you…don’t…know…Train? Well I do now! But that is right faithful blog readers, there is hope for anyone aspiring to write for the Muffin. In fact, Sydney C was the one who discovered Train – standing outside a used record store with a sign that said, “Will work for slightly nostalgic shoe-gaze club-thumping records.” Clearly an interview with the rest of Muffin team was unnecessary.
Wait, I’m sorry, you came here for music didn’t you? I can’t tell you a little bit about my trip out East? Well, it’s kinda how I came across Temper Trap.
I stayed in New York with a talented and film obsessed chick named Brie. And amid a lively Jager-bomb session our own Train turned out to be quite the filmophile himself. Anyways, through four or so hours of drunken conversation I somehow plucked the film 500 Days of Summer out of the air – and kept the thought with me back to Santa Monica.
Not that I have seen the movie yet (and if I had, that review would be on the Film Muffin and not here, whoops, I’ve said too much already). But I did seek out the soundtrack – the description I got from Brie sounded like the perfect movie for a sweet indie music accompaniment (Or maybe SHE told me that the soundtrack was cool and I forgot and am now passing that thought off as my own, I don’t really know, New York was fuckin’ crazy!).
Temper Trap and their track Sweet Disposition stood out amongst old Regina Spektor songs and the usual suspects of young romantic comedies (cool She & Him song worth mentioning though).
The band hails from Australia and seems to be a recent darling of British indie radio. Each time I hear the songs I want to compare the sound to other bands I’ve heard before – but the next time I listen, I have a new band in mind. So I will leave it up to you to make your comparisons. They have Twitter too!
I guess that is all I’ve got for you – I met Train homie! Yeah! Oh, and in Canada they actually do say Buddy and Eh all the time. And they can’t tell the difference between dirt and sand. I don’t think they have sand though. That was a fucked up thing for me to say now that I realize they don’t have any sand. Oh well, USA…USA…USA.

Temper Trap’s album should hit US stores next Tuesday.
Bonus! I had this song playing in my head every time I walked down a New York street…

a) We should definitely continue the J-bombing at CMJ and/or Sufjan later this year homie.
b) Big fan of Temper Trap, looking forward to hearing the rest of the album
c) I’m still waiting on my club-thumping records…
CMJ looks like a plan to me. I’m willing to forgo Sufjan to appease the rest of you.
I think it is also worth noting that Train has become our most prolific writer – such to the point where articles he doesn’t even write are ABOUT him. Good grief.
I love this post.
I added your blog to bookmarks. And i’ll read your articles more often!
You guys keep putting out some good bands.
Loving temper trap.
