On Tuesday I wrote about the band Magic Man. In the article I referenced them belonging to the same discovery bin as Pretty Good Dance Moves. Wouldn’t ya know it two days later we here at the Muffin got a sneak peek at the long awaited new PGDM EP. For fans of electro-pop you are about to flip your wig.
After listening to the EP all day long I decided I had to share it with the bakery. The EP won’t be available for purchase until March 2nd, but I hope you don’t mind if we give it an early spin.
Pretty Good Dance Moves is primarily the work of Jimmy Giannapoulos and Aaron Allieta. Jimmy can often be heard providing backing vocals on many of the tracks with various lead vocals provided by stars of the New York music scene (Brooklyn stand up!). In fact, the most interesting part of the EP is hearing the different stylings coming from the guest singers over the consistently crafty electro-pop.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – Sample Your Body (ft. Angelina Lucero, Jimmy G)
The opening track, Sample Your Body, features Jimmy on vox and their primary female lead, Angelina Lucero. That is her with the steampunk style vacuum (yeah, she is a cutie). And what a great song to open the EP – powerful synth stabs over highly danceable glitchy beats. If you are a fan of Discovery, this track will make you a believer of PGDM’s spot in your next mixtape.
You’ll also notice the start of a theme that runs throughout this album – dancing! So get your toe-tappin’ shoes ready.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – Leave Me Alone (ft. Bjorn Yttling, Angelina Lucero)
You may have heard Leave Me Alone in 2009 as it made its way around various music blogs. Definitely a good track, once again featuring Angelina, and featuring a special guest appearance by Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. I think this track may have been selected as their stand-out hit before many of the other songs on this EP were finished. Maybe I’m jaded from listening to it a million times, but the other tracks on the EP seemed a bit more mind-blowing in my opinion. But if this is your first listen, you will love.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – 600 Days (ft. Heather Christian)
600 Days features the vocals of Heather Christian, who seems to take the tempo down a notch. But on subsequent listens, you’ll realize the BPM hasn’t changed as much as you thought – its the smoky, haunting voice of Christian that has slowed down your mind. No shit, listen again, it is like a musical illusion.
Heather Christian is a fixture in New York with her band the Arbornauts. Really nice to see the depth of singers they brought on board – nice job Jimmy and Aaron!
The next song is called Tear Us Up and features a singer who immediately had me searching for every bit of info I could off the Google machine. Angelina is clearly a perfect fit for the PGDM sound, but Sydney Wayser is a STRONG second.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – Tear Us Up (ft. Sydney Wayser)
After you listen to that track you are going to want to hear a bit more of Sydney Wayser. And lucky for us, she has her very own Daytrotter session. Her solo stuff is really great, and will give you an even deeper appreciation for the process PGDM went through in finding the talent for their songs.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – Alive Tonight (ft. Angelina Lucero, Jimmy G)
The next song is called Alive Tonight, once again fitted with Angelina. This song is like an emotional roller coaster – asking you to first get up and dance, and yet, you will eventually find yourself laying on the ground.
I love the kick drum just punching you in the chest consistently throughout the whole song. And at the same time we hear synth blips like butterflies fluttering around the soothing vocal melody. Man, I wish some of these songs were ten minutes long – just want to keep seeing where the song will go.
Pretty Good Dance Moves – Leave Me Alone (Infernal Devices Remix)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
And finally we have a remix of the Bjorn Yttling song by Brooklyn’s Infernal Devices. Hadn’t heard of these guys before, but in addition to this solid PGDM remix their MySpace has a bunch of cool remixes including the NY standard Sleepyhead.
Pretty Good Dance Moves will be playing a show at Schubas in Chicago on March 12th to kick off the EP release.
And like I said before, the EP will be released at the beginning of March – so don’t forget or I will have to set you a reminder on your GMail. And don’t think I won’t!

dear PGDM, please come to San Diego. Thanks, B
