Patrick Watson’s voice leaves his lips with the same intensity as Stevie Ray Vaughan playing a nasty guitar solo. Watson’s unshaven face scrunches together as the left side of his mouth belches out something astonishing.
To say that Patrick Watson’s voice is stunning is an understatement.
And since this article is being published on Thanksgiving, I thought it only proper to feature a Canadian on the bakery.
We first wrote about Patrick on the first Muffin post ever, as a guest singer for The Cinematic Orchestra. This was 2006, the same year we heard his debut album, Close To Paradise. If you missed it, I might consider it prerequisite listening for this years Wooden Arms.
As the years had gone by without any news I had almost forgotten about Quebec’s Patrick Watson and his merry band of cohorts. It took Le Blogotheque to point my ears back at Watson. And I had missed the news of his 2009 release. I couldn’t let 2009 end without the Muffin given Watson his proper due.
One of the great things that you see in Watson’s videos and even his very captivating website is that the art goes well beyond the music. I honestly went to every page on his website because of how cool the design is (the bio page is the best).
You can also check out all of his videos at the website, which are also very unique and possibly creepy.
After a casual listen you might be saying this is the Canadian version of Coldplay, but I urge you to dig deeper into the music. Maybe even cop an album and you will see the depth and creativity in the mysterious creature known as Patrick Watson.
Afterthought insert: I wrote most of this article on Tuesday night, and now I’m back at his website and all the images/videos are different. Has anyone ever read House of Leaves? If you have, his website is the visual representation of the madness of that book.
