I was driving down Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica the other day when I pulled up alongside a group of girls with their windows rolled down. They were all singing along to I’m On A Boat. And it reminded me that we are knee deep in this wonderful time of the year called Summer.
Possibly because it is summer I have found a place on my iPod for the new Owl City album, Ocean Eyes. Wow, I just realized how that opening analogy really fit perfectly into the topic of this post.
I first found Owl City while on my endless quest for Robot Music, as they filter all their vocals through a light dash of Autotune. You can throw this band in the same happy pile with Postal Service, HelloGoodbye, Faded Paper Figures, and Run Toto Run.
The songs are full of electric flair and even when you find yourself trying to sing a long to lyrics that make little to no sense, you will be sure to have a smile on your face. The lead singer pens his quirky melodies and intricate electronic arrangements from a tiny little town with nae a critic to tell him that his songs are too happy-go-lucky for any critical acclaim. But you’ve found a friend here in the bakery.
Although this album came out this week the songs do sound familiar, so I’m not sure who is pulling my leg or if my dreams of having precognitive abilities have finally materialized. Either way – this is probably new territory for you and I promise if you are driving in a car full of girls alongside the ocean you will enjoy this music.
Their stand-out song is a very uplifting, and ironic for the setting, tune called Hello Seattle. I was even more excited to find a remix of that song on this album that I will explain through a scene I imagine will one day happen with this song serving as the backdrop. Follow along with the song playing to get the full effect.
The prom planning committee has run out of ideas. Their morale is low. No one makes eye contact as they sit in the audotorium sorrounded by piles of colorful paper and sparkly streamers. The shopping is done, but the purpose of their adventure has alluded them.
Suddenly someone makes a bold move. They grab some paint and splash color to a huge piece of butcher paper. Soon others join in. The music picks up and soon everyone is skipping around the room, work is getting done.
Everything is coming together in perfect harmony. People are high fiving as they cross the room trading ribbons for banners. Where should they put the shoe containters (this is a sock hop after all)? The problem is solved quickly. The nerd turns to the cheerleader and she smiles.
As the music fades they all join in a pose you’d only see on an episode of Saved By The Bell. The prom is ready to go and they have done an AMAZING job.
Ahahahahahaha. Well anyways, have a good weekend, and if you put on some Owl City while getting ready to go out – you are going to have a way better time. Trust me.
And if you do trust me, buy their album! ![]()

Come on Frank! It’s 110 degrees here! Not cool. The girls hibernate here in during the summer
i have always loved Owl City and Hello Seattle is my favorirte song. The remix totally made me smile (=
i love all their songs but this one is different. It’s robot techno meets 2009 pop, any girl or guy that doesn’t like it is crazy… Adams hottt
