If you read my U-N-I post a few months back, you may recognize the name “Miguel Jontel.”  He is the young man who set fire to the chorus on U-N-I’s “Lately.”  And, Miguel is largely responsible for my personal discovery (and ongoing iPod affair with) U-N-I.  If my brother had never played the version of “Lately” with Miguel on the hook, causing me to scream “WHO THE F-CK IS THAT?” and jump up and down on a Planet Hollywood bed during our last trip to Las Vegas, I may have never become the guy currently checking height requirements and taking tickets for U-N-I’s bandwagon.

Well, Miguel Jontel has done it again.

A few days ago, I found one of his new tracks, titled “All I Want Is You (Featuring J. Cole).”  About eight counts into his first verse I realized:

1 – At times, his falsetto sounds similar to Mario “Yellow Man” Winans

2 – He really just Barry Bonds-ed another track out the muf-ckin’ park

and

3 – I’m HOOKED on this “All I Want Is You” joint!

The track has a groovy, organic feel to it.  Sonically, it is very “East Coast, Boom-Bap” (courtesy of Salaam Remi, we hear).  I don’t usually favor that production style if it’s not Gang Starr, but this time it just fits.  And vocally, the song is remarkable.  I played this joint 22 times today (my Addictive Personality Disorder is a separate topic entirely).  I simply cannot get enough of the vocals.

This song could easily stand on Miguel’s astonishing vocal quality alone, but lucky for us, there’s more.  Lyrically, the piece is quite touching.  It’s not often that you will hear a Hip-Hop/Electro House DJ say something like that.

It’s that real.

I like Miguel’s voice so much that I wish we were friends so I could email him all of my favorite songs and somehow either guilt or blackmail him into singing me cover versions of them.  Matter of fact, can we just get Miguel to remake all of Michael McDonald’s covers so we can force that doosh out of the industry entirely?  Thanks.

I feel so much better about the state of R&B music knowing Miguel is out there plotting to take over.

If you know someone that likes to say “These new cats aren’t singing about anything anymore,” please download this song, burn it to a CD and dub that CD onto a cassette tape for them.

Miguel, If you’re reading this, The Muffin is feeling your music…and wants to do an interview…and wants to manage you.

I skipped down and played the song thinking the title said ‘Montell Jordan’. I figured it out while reading the article, but that first paragraph had me scratching my head.
