While Train and his east-coasters are getting ready for CMJ, here in Los Angeles we have a festival going on too! I’m talking about Culture Collide.
Filter Magazine’s World Music themed festival is finally upon us, starting this Thursday. Eh, and I don’t mean World Music as in that section of the record store that always confused you as a kid, I mean they’ve brought acts from all over the world to play at some of LA’s hippest (And I do mean hipster hippest) music venues.
I’ve written in the past about what the event actually is, and you can get all the details at their website, so let’s take a look at what not to miss this week on the east side.

Things get kicked off at The Standard with a DJ Set by festival headliners Black Lips and a performance I am definitely excited for, Theophilus London.
This event might be VIP, but I’m sure if you bring hot ladies (or are hot ladies), the same Standard rules of entry apply as every other night of the year.

I’m probably gonna stay at the Echo all night in anticipation for Casiokids at 11:30. The Standard does have quite the killer DJ line-up though, with a headlining spot for Sebastian Tellier. Pro-tip: Yes, The Black Atlantic is playing at Taix that night, but they are also playing later in the week.

If you are lucky enough to have flexible working hours you can hop over to Taix at around 2PM to catch an acoustic set from Tokyo Police Club. And after their set, I hear there is going to be free beer (Hot Dog’s favorite, Carlsburg). Yes!
And then I think your best bet is to head over to the Echoplex/Echo who has headliners Klaxons and The Boxer Rebellion respectively. I’m planning to bounce back and forth all night and see if I can hear some new music.

Saturday I’m going to start by seeing The Black Atlantic at 826LA, which is the new spot to see good music for people in the know. Just kidding, I have no idea what it is, their website seems to suggest a non-profit place for kids? Who cares, The Black Atlantic is going to be spell-binding, I promise.
Oh, and earlier in the day Taix has a TBD special guest performance. Might have to check that out if I can get out there in time. They are the free beer place remember.
That night I’m interested to see White Lies at Echoplex. They are very eighties fantastic and Mumford and Sons covered one of their songs, so they must be cool.
Sunday, October 10th, 2010
Sunday is when Culture Collide and Toyota’s Block Party thing combine forces and bring you big live performances from Tokyo Police Club, Phantogram, Sea Wolf, AM, and many of the other headliners from previous nights.
If you only have time for one day, this is it. But keep in mind this is a free event and will be a street festival kind of vibe.
Hope to see you there! Oh, and here is music…
