My search for the cutest indie pop band has finally ended. The Pipettes were a fierce competitor, but they’ve been trumped by The Bird and the Bee’s buttery vocals and effervescent sounds, and let’s not forget to mention their quintessential London style. Los Angeles natives Inara George (the bird) and Greg Kurstin (the bee) make up this jazz-influenced electro pop duo. They met while Greg was producing Inara’s first album, bonded over old jazz standards and decided to start this experiment in musical ambrosia.
It’s always odd to me that we look towards musicians for more than just music – we want the package deal: the clothes, the hair and the lifestyle seem to be just as important (and in some cases, more important than the music). I’ve never been one to get stuck on the flannel shirts of my youth’s bands, but perhaps that was because the styles never called to me like the style of the Bird and the Bee does right now. Granted, it’s a historical style, but I’ll still give them credit just for doing it so darn well.
