…okay, I guess that’s not completely true. Kurt Vile is a guitarist for Muffin fave The War on Drugs, so I suppose I have unknowingly been jamming out to him since the criminally underrated Wagonwheel Blues came out last summer. Now I don’t know about you, but I love any kind of music that reminds me of summer. In fact if you read through a couple of my older posts you’ll notice that a lot of the bands that I write about get their 15 minutes of fame on the Muffin solely due to their ability to inspire visions of Corona, flip flops and stunna shades. Maybe it was the years of brutal Wisco winters followed by less-brutal-but-equally-painful Northeastern blusteries (just made that word up) that make me yearn for the sweet nectar of sun-drenched melodies – I don’t know, I just know what I like.
Which brings me to Mr. K to the Vile. Recently signed to Matador Records, KV has two(?) solo albums under his belt, with a new album titled Childish Prodigy out this fall. Party music it is not; instead I like to think that KV manages to capture that feeling of a lazy Saturday spent at the beach and the potential of the summer’s night ahead. The sound is not abrupt and in-your-face, but rather seeps into the background and slowly permeates your cranium. Some may call it homemade hazy lo-fi mood music, others may say it’s bare bones spacey pysch-folk. But whatever you want to call it, I think you should pour yourself a drink, put your feet up and help yourself to a sunset complete with a Kurt Vile soundtrack.
