I started listening to Junior Boys during a phase when I was feeling very fondly of mellow electronic music. I tend to gravitate towards mellower music, and when I started to see a trend towards incorporating electronic music with slow, relaxing tracks – it doesn’t get much better than that for me.
I’ll give credit where credit is due and say that I think this trend began with the groundbreaking Discovery album by Daft Punk. There may have been slow electronic music before that, but it was always paired with some faceless diva who would hold her notes for way too long. But think about the first time you heard “Digital Love” or “Something About You”.
In the past few years there have been other musicians who have been pushing this genre, particularly Dntel and LCD Soundsystem, as well as other one-off songs from popular Electro artists like Chemical Brothers teaming with Midlake.
So it is great to see that Junior Boys are finally coming with a new album, Begone Dull Care. The album can be characterized by the steady, thumping, electronic beats paired with slow, wispy, honest lyrics.
And hopefully from the direction that indie music is taking, we can expect to see more and more bands explore this area of mellow electronica.
Their new album comes out April 7th.
