Welcome back. What you are hearing is Delta Spirit. They combine the edginess of Indie rock renegades with the soulfulness of folk rock poets quite well. In all honesty, Delta Spirit sounds like what you would get if you locked the Cold War Kids and Bob Dylan in a room full of instruments and Red Bulls. This group is seriously and even dangerously standing on the edge of stardom. Definitely one of those bands that we will be seeing soon in Rolling Stone as one to watch closely. You will be, possibly unknowingly, hearing their music played at trendy bars and restaurants and before too long they will infiltrate your record collection and/or iPod (for the more tech savvy) and finally snatch your remaining dollars for a pair of tickets to see them live.
Having toured with their buddies, the aforementioned Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit is making themselves known. As they continue to play with credited Indie bands (Dr. Dog, Matt Costa, The Walkmen, etc.) they will continue to bag a solid fan-base and before too long I will be writing about whoever just opened for Delta Spirit (The Morning Benders maybe??).
Feb 28 - OC Performing Artscenter w/ THE WALKMEN Costa Mesa, California
Mar 1 - Noise Pop @ Cafe Du Nord San Francisco, California
Mar 7 - Troubadour West Hollywood, California
Mar 8 - The Casbah San Diego, California
Mar 10 - Modified Arts Phoenix, Arizona
After recently witnessing their sound at a venue that could very well be deemed as a place of Delta Spirit residency, The Casbah, it was further confirmed why they are already a “talked about band” in San Diego. Matt Vasquez (frontman) was all over the stage, seemingly bouncing from instrument to instrument. Jon Jameson (bassist) controlled the heart beat of each song. Even caught some trash can banging percussions amongst the excitement. They were simply put, having fun. The crowd was stoked too, and with PBR tall cans in hand, danced their asses off. I always love a band that demands every last bit of sound from every last speaker.
I have said enough.
Go see them, enjoy a beer or beverage of choice, dance a little and then buy their music. Also, if you know a record exec, tell them to sign ‘em.
