James Yuill Harnesses The Elements

There is a lot of electronic music floating around these days. And let’s be honest, a lot of it is pretty horrible. When it suddenly becomes possible for any kid on the street to pick up some software and make electronic music, there is bound to be a bit of a quality problem.
And at the Audio Muffin we get to hear a ton of this wannabe electro nonsense. As much as I like Passion Pit and MGMT - you guys have created a monster.
But every once in awhile when the moon is full and the beers are still half price post-happy hour you get something special. This latest diamond in the rough is James Yuill.
The best bit of flattery I can give Yuill is that the closest group you will find to his sound is Miike Snow. And you know what that means - James puts together songs that are complete songs. There are tons of layers to his songs, melody changes, bridges, crescendos - basically everything you need for the hack in his basement to scratch his head like, “How the fuck did he make that?”
His latest album, Turning Down Water For Air (Remixed), has just hit the US and is a bit of a concept album that perfectly encapsulates James Yuill. The remixed moniker is a bit misleading as this isn’t exactly what you would expect from a remix album (you know, like 3 songs remixed eight different times - who wants to hear the same song for 30 minutes straight?).
This album has taken the original Turning Down Water For Air and turned the electro tracks to acoustic tracks and vice versa. But don’t worry, this isn’t the Godfather series, knowledge of the first album release is not a prerequisite.
Each track is either designated as Fire (electro) or Earth (acoustic). And when you combine this with the album title, Yuill has literally harnessed all of the elements - yeah he did! That is really the best way to describe his music though - it has everything you’re looking for.
