Coming off a sweeping tour with Muffin favorite, Miike Snow, you may be wondering, “who is this Jack Peñate character who recently stormed through my hometown and made my body move in ways I didn’t know possible?” Please indulge the following annotation. Peñate embodies the classic tale of an artist who successfully broke through the underground glass ceiling and swiftly moved ranks up the class system of the DJ music hierarchy. Hailing London Town, Peñate began circulating the club scene, gaining popularity primarily with poppy covers and remixed favorites. Once becoming a distinguishable DJ, he was swooped by XL Recordings and began working on his freshman LP which would release in 2007 entitled Matinée. The album received slightly ordinary marks, but Peñate was determined to show his true talents that had set him aside from his thousands of counterparts in the industry. 2009 was his year. On August 24th, Peñate released his second LP entitled Everything Is New. The album is a dance enthusing, beat thumping collection of tunes that clearly put Peñate on another stage. Sophomore albums can tell us a lot, especially after a mediocre initial release. I think that this album will re-assure those naysayers that Jack Peñate is legit. “Today’s Tonight, Tonight’s Today, Today’s Tonight!” What the hell is he saying? I don’t know but I love it. Reminds me of those crazy nights that seem to never end, bar to bar, random events and encounters and usually ending up at Mel’s Drive In or something crazy like that. Either way, I think you will find these tunes handy as you are pressing your slacks or curling your hair in preparation for a lovely Saturday evening on the town.
