Husker Du

It’s the name of a Scandinavian Childs game. It means do you remember? It’s also the name of one of my favorite bands. I’ve always been a sucker for quirky band names, but that one stands out always because it reminds me of why I love music so much. It’s an integral part of everything I do. It’s attached to my memories in such a way as to be the catalytic converter for that metaphysical can of worms I call my brain. Do you remember? I remember. It’s always the same. That subtle fssst-pop cherry high I would get when the needle drops onto a glossy black vinyl record and what follows is nothing less than euphoria. My hair stands up and I feel like a kid again, sitting cross-legged on my living room carpet screaming, “play it again, play it again.” I get that feeling every time I hear a great song.

So queue the intro: my name is Ray Fernandez and I want to share music with you. I’d like to invite you into my living room and play some music for you. I want to rub my feet on the carpet, reach over, and give you that static shock that is music. That’s why I’m here, and hopefully that’s why you’re here. So with that said, what’s on the menu today? Well there’s a band I’ve been listening to for a hot minute called Chiquita Violenta. They’re from Mexico and they stirred up some dust as well as critical acclaim recently in Austin for the SXSW festival. The album Stars and Sons Sessions on Noiselab Records was released last year and has slowly gained critical acclaim. Other than that I don’t know much about the band except the fact that they have been compared to the likes of Broken Social Scene. You might agree if you listen to the song “Lay Down” which is currently burning a hole in my ipod. But once you get a little further into this band you’ll find that this Spanish pony’s got legs. The Byrds cover (Eight Miles High-also covered by Husker Du) displays an uncommon maturity but belies the “Newfeld sound” that permeates this freshman release.

Throw this on the next time your laying about on a Sunday afternoon, and remember.
