Following a ten-year album production hiatus (1997 to 2007), Dinosaur Jr. (which was once Dinosaur) broke silence with Beyond (2007) which was initially received with mixed feelings by those who fancied themselves alt-rock aficionados. For anyone who thought this was a one-time “told-you-so” comeback album, the release of Farm on June 23, 2009 put those thoughts to rest. The distorted, high feedback formula that had personified the band in the late 80’s and early 90’s simply needed its original components to regain its footing. J Masics, Murph and Lou Barlow were finally re-united and throwing down tracks like it was 1986 and Sonic Youth was picking them up to tour or it was ‘92 and Cobain was telling people that this band rocked. The album stylistically continues to feature Masics’ melting solos, Barlow’s high-gain, low-tone bass lines and some really excellent song writing. Dinosaur Jr. is clearly far from extinct.
