If you’ve been listening to the new Avett Brothers album a lot lately and are looking for something along those same southern roots; I’ve got you!
Dawes, however, is a California band. They are based out of Northridge, California although according to another Muffin author they’re originally from Malibu. And if that is still the case, that is good news for Cal State Northridge alums (which I am one). Their new album is called North Hills, which is a small suburb to the north of Northridge (we like to make sure people are aware of our topside geography there). And if they named their album after that particular suburb I am surprised and tickled.
The name Dawes also happens to be the middle name of frontman Taylor Goldsmith. We assume the remaining band members have no middle names (which is more common than you think!).
The album definitely feels influenced by southern rock. Each song has a steady flow filled with great guitar riffs and very active bass lines. You’ll have no problem bobbing your head while taking notice of the carefully crafted melodies (think Avett). And when you hear that occasional organ you know things have gotten a bit heavier.
I find myself leaning towards the slower tracks. Filled with smooth harmonies and careful acoustic plucking. If you are a fan of The Avett Brothers or Band of Horses, I think I’ve got your next band here. And if you are Dave Baker, I hope this one earns your approval!
