On Monday I posted a Xaphoon Jones remix of a Darwin Deez song, Radar Detector. I know the article was all about rap, but that Deez song is the one I was really hoping people would take a shine to.
I was trying to describe Darwin Deez’s sound and came up with:
A lo-fi Ben Gibbard singing discarded Strokes B sides (and not giving a fuck).
I’ve also seen him described as a hipster so hip you can’t help but love him. That kinda seems like an oxymoron to me, but his music is pretty fantastic. He’s been touring like third and fourth bill for a bit, which seems pretty incredible considering some of the third and fourth billed acts I’ve seen lately.
This type of quirky, lo-fi, indie pop usually stays pretty hidden from the masses. In fact, I think you have to go through an independent seller to even grab the Darwin Deez album. Which is pretty disappointing because I love this type of music.
I’m actually in the process of trying to convert someone from a love of Lady Gaga and Britney Spears to a love of Belle and Sebastion and Regina Spektor (just quick examples). And I think Darwin Deez would be a perfect song to put on a mix (mix cd is of course step one in the indie brainwashing process). But then I reconsider, thinking this might be more of a second level introduction.
Now that I think of it, I think I can get them hooked if I can take them from Strokes, through Albert Hammond Jr’s solo work, a detour through some Death Cab EPs, and then finally to Deez. yeah, that oughta get ‘em.
