I have something very special for you today. For people that know me, it is no secret that LCD Soundsystem is one of my favorite bands. And when I talk about LCD Soundsystem, I am specifically talking about their album Sound of Silver, which Pitchfork called the 2nd best album in 2007 (which mind you was behind Panda Bear, which sure, whatever, Panda Bear, yeah, I get it, but seriously…Panda Bear?).
In 2009 we all made a lot of really cool musical friends through the Muffin. The Flying Change and Sam Jacobs was one of my highlights. My first encounter with the Change was a smokey, lounge style cover he had done of LCD Soundsystem’s All My Friends. And I’ve said it before, but LCD Soundsystem is such a great band, with such great songs; but Sam makes this song…chilling.

Well, a couple months ago, Sam emailed to let me know of a special show The Flying Change was playing in NYC (I live in LA, damn it). I seriously contemplated booking a flight when Sam mentioned they would be unleashing a new LCD cover. The East Coast contingency of the bakery (mainly Train) had already committed to another show that night, and so we were all left to wonder what could have been for the last two months.
However, The Flying Change…recorded the song.

The dynamics of the song are very different, but equally as exciting. Where All My Friends was a stripped down, piano-led, touching performance; Someone Great brings The Flying Change to an orchestral 13-piece band. Each member of the band adds their own rhythm and titillating flurish. If anyone has video of this please leave a link in the comments – it sounds epic!
The show you’re hearing took place at the Rockwood Music Hall on December 3rd 2009.
The Flying Change has an album out that I wrote about early last year. For those that have already picked it up you can look forward to some new music coming soon, for which Sam calls a “dance EP”. The name of the EP: Singer/Songwriter. Obviously, I understand that The Flying Change is very much led in a singer/songwriter veign; but for a dance EP, that title is absolutely amazing (I hope they keep it!).
Stay tuned to the Muffin for any future developments. And if you haven’t picked up The Flying Change album – do it! And if you haven’t picked up Sound of Silver…stop reading my blog (just kidding).
Axel Foley: Hey! Hey! There is no pizza at the door! Wait, did you start the article without me??
Shut up Axel.
