If you spend most of your day yearning for the new Passion Pit album or still trying to figure out if the sophomore albums from Miike Snow or Bon Iver are better than their debuts you might not have heard of Chester French. But if you follow Aston Kutcher on Twitter and still think Pharrell “has it” then you might already be a fan.
Wait, stay with me.
Chester French’s first single off their new album is called Black Girls and I would say, much like Asther Roth’s I Love College tries a little too hard to cater to the masses with a sensational idea that everyone can laugh at. But it is their second single Interesting Times that really caught my attention. Check out the opening lines.
I can’t believe I’m gonna die one day. I can’t believe we’ll all be gone. I can’t believe that I won’t be 25 for much longer now.
And it’s weird this room’s gonna disappear. And that somebody lived here before. It’s weird I live in four dimensions, but there might be more.
And the rest of the song kind of explores the times that we are living in and how people in the future and from the past will live in such different circumstances. Just a really beautiful pop song that kind of makes you think about your own existence. Whoa.
Based on that one song alone I am super excited to hear what the whole album holds.
But doing some further research on the band you’ll find that they have a mixtape as well. And on this mixtape there are some album cuts in addition to some cool pop-rock songs with people rapping over them. And by people I mean Diddy, Wale, Pusha-T, Common, Jadakiss, the list goes on. I guess Pharrell signed the guys from the group, but how a mixtape with so many rappers from different camps came together defies any logic. But I can’t say I’m upset, the mixtape is awesome. The Common song is especially sweet, with Common lending a similar style as he did with the 80s-inspired Universal Mind Control.
Their newest album is called Music 4 Tngrs and comes out on June 19th. It promises fun pop songs with humor thrown in and I can’t wait.
