“The Felt boys are back, the boys of summer, and this time ya boy Ace Rock is the drummer”

The title of this post was supposed to be clever, but now I’m realizing that it sounds like the title of a movie starring copious amounts of drug use – oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.

Today’s bakery all-stars are Felt, the indie hip-hop super duo comprised of Slug of Atmosphere fame, and Murs of Living Legends and generally being awesome fame.  Come tomorrow (11/17) Felt will be dropping their third album, appropriately titled Felt 3, and somewhat inappropriately subtitled A Tribute To Rosie Perez.  What’s with the Rosie Perez reference you ask? Well, it’s not the first time Sluggo and Murs have gone down the name-an-album-after-a-random-actress-rabbithole  — the first Felt album/EP was A Tribute To Christina Ricci, while the second paid homage to Denise Huxtable with A Tribute To Lisa Bonet.  By the way, who doesn’t like The Cosby Show? Trick question, because I know that everyone loves the Cosby’s and their G-rated shenanigans.  I mean, try watching this and not slow clapping in your apartment.

Enough jokes, on with the jams.  Each Felt album has had a different beat maestro in charge of producing. Felt 1 found The Grouch behind the mixing board, while producing duties for Felt 2 were overseen by Atmosphere’s audio architect, Ant.  This time around the Felt boys selected Aesop Rock to captain the Rosie Perez ship – an intriguing choice in my book, as Ace, in addition to being a hyper-lyricist, tends to dabble with darker, more abstract energy when it comes beat time.  It’s interesting to hear Murs and Slug trading verses over something that would feel right at home on Labor Days (Aesop’s third album), but the partners in rhyme pull it off like it’s their job – which I suppose it is really.  Neck-snappers included below, so crank that shit and get your Felt on.

Dude, back in the day that Murs song was me and my girl’s theme song! Brought a smile to my face to see and hear it on the hype machine. Thank you.

Protagonist is a super jam. Daylight is still one of the best hip hop songs of all time. Nightlight is even off the hook too.
