Baths Band

Yesterday I got my hands on Anticon’s latest release from LA-based Baths.  Midway through the second song I knew this was very important music.

First, what does Baths sound like?  Believe it or not it sounds a lot like Toro Y Moi got into a mixing battle with Pogo and Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos and Jai Paul decided to freestyle lyrics over the beats.  If that sounds like a bit too much to swallow, I agree, but believe me when I say this is important music.

My favorite thing to find when looking for new music is that “new new” as Cudi would say.  A lot of times you’ll find a band that sounds really great and has cool tunes and you’ll say, “Wow, this is good music.”  But then there are other times, which are usually much less frequent, where you hear a band that is good but also doing things with music you’ve never heard before and you’ll say, “Holy shit, what is this music trying to do, this is amazing!”

What is music going to sound like in 10 years?  Could it be this?  Are Toro Y Moi, Pogo, Animal Collective, and now Baths paving the way for the future of music or are they simply creating new genres that will only ever find a niche audience?  I’d like to think the former.

Okay, so Baths is one dude.  He actually grew up in the San Fernando Valley aka the setting for the movie Clueless aka where I went to college.  And I’m not saying there is a battle brewing for which US coast is bringing better music, but Train, this one is LA son – sorry.

Like I said Baths is under the Anticon label.  The album will be released July 6th.  Right now you can pre-order the album on iTunes.  And I assure you, if you are always trying to be on the cutting edge of music, this one will slice ya.

    I am on this.

Something about this music makes me want to DJ a really sexy party where the lighting is dim with a reddish tint. And I want to play “Maximalist” while I do so…
