I love Germany. I really do. Everything about it. Beautiful country filled with beautiful women and a lifestyle built around massive amounts of cold beer. The Deutsch also have a solid history of successful DJs so it was no surprise to me that the latest sound machine dj-duo signed by Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) Music came to my ears via lunar orbit over the streets of Cologne.

As only an encounter with the 3rd kind can be, the facts surrounding Ancient Astronauts leave much to the imagination, but I can confirm the duo returned to planet Earth in 2001 after traveling the musical cosmos for thousands of years. The chaps known as Dogu and Kabanjak released a tremendous sonic offering with their latest album We Are To Answer earlier this summer and then spent the fall opening for Thievery Corporation on their U.S. tour. Much in the spirit of the ESL roster – (which is run by Garza & Hilton of Thievery) – their music is eclectic – every song on We Are To Answer is something different. Contraband sized traces of ultra-lounge d&b grooves, heavy hip-hop bass, fat dub reggae and mellow artistic funk located all throughout their space vehicle that clearly points to intoxicated interstellar travel. They throw spacey-vibe stuff down and can back it up with a stellar blend of MC talent like Bootie Brown and Imani of legendary hip hop group The Pharcyde. Currently back home in Germany after a busy fall season spreading the word on the Thievery tour, they’re playing shows around the Cologne base camp through the end of 2009 and should be well set for another year of exploring the cosmos in 2010.
