1990s2.jpgHow excited am I to be writing about 1990s? So excited. Record shopping this weekend, (Rhino in Claremont- sorry Frank!) I just wasn’t finding anything I was looking for. I just happened to pick this record up, and it was the best thing that I could have found.

Ex-Yummy Fur frontman John McKeown and Michael McGaughrin were friends who really liked to have a good time. They notoriously took loads of drugs, drank a lot and basically lived on the party circuit in Glasgow. They started writing songs as jokes to each other, and that’s when they struck gold. After only 6 gigs, they were signed to Rough Trade, and Cookies was born.

Because they had such a great time while writing these songs, it really comes through in the music. In the same vein as Supergrass, it’s high energy, and will have you dancing or laughing in no time. So far they’ve toured with bands like The Strokes, Belle & Sebastian, and even McKeown’s old Yummy Fur bandmates, Franz Ferdinand, and have quickly established credibility. Still not convinced? Bernard Butler produced the album.

I predict you will be hearing a lot from these guys in the near future, and licensing will be a likelihood. PS- They’re playing The Troubadour on October 27th- I’ve already got my tickets. I highly recommend you catch them while you can!
